Welcome to SIMEC 2013!

One of the main characteristics of the International Symposium on Extracellular Matrix (SIMEC) has been its multidisciplinary approach to the roles of Extracellular Matrix (ECM) during normal development and in diseases such as cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, etc. The shape and dimensions of SIMEC allow a great interaction among researchers, as well as proximity of leading researchers with graduate students and post-docs, who benefit from the informal atmosphere of the event. Keeping this tradition of excellence, for the edition of 2013 we are planning conferences with some of the leading authorities in the fields of Glycobiology, Cell Biology, Biomechanics, Genetics and Bioengineering!
Among the issues discussed in the 2013 SIMEC, we highlight the relationships between microRNAs and the ECM, the use of ECM therapies for degenerative diseases, the development of artificial matrices for tissue engineering, in addition to discussing the role of the dimension and composition of ECM on cell migration, cell differentiation, stem cell biology and tumor biology. Poster sessions will be held to present and discuss research results. We will also have a tribute to Prof. Ricardo Brentani, who passed away in 2011. Prof. Brentani played a central role during the creation of the 1st SIMEC, anticipating that Brazilian researchers working on different biological models could talk and interact scientifically.
We welcome you to this event to be held in the Atlântico Búzios Hotel, in Armação dos Búzios, Rio de Janeiro, a wonderful site with a relaxing atmosphere and gorgeous nature.
